Implementation details

The tunnel under the Martwa Wisła River is Poland’s longest underwater crossing and one of the flagship investments of the City of Gdańsk. It links the western part of the city with the Port Island, allowing the drivers to bypass the crowded city center.

At the stage of its construction, ELDRO Group was responsible for the development and implementation of the electrical and ICT infrastructure, video monitoring systems, weather stations, variable message signs, and the vehicle height and weight control system.

When the tunnel was opened in April 2016, as a subcontractor of Siemens Mobility Ltd., we assumed control over tasks related to the maintenance of the devices and systems operating in the tunnel. The maintenance and service work is performed in accordance with strict SLA standards, which impose strict requirements regarding timing and technical aspects of service.

The scope of our work on the maintenance of the tunnel under the Martwa Wisła River can be illustrated with the following statistical data:

  • 1377,5 meters – total length of the tunnel under the Martwa Wisła River
  • two tunnel tubes with a diameter of 11 meters each
  • 112 IP cameras
  • 40 speakers
  • 200 power and control electric switchgear
  • 450 fittings of tunnel lighting and exit light fixtures
  • 190 kilometers of cables
  • an average volume of approximately 29,000 car per day

Scope of executed works

  • removing failures and faults of equipment operating in the tunnel
  • maintenance of traffic lights, variable messages signs, SOS call boxes, weather stations and IP cameras which allow to monitor and detect problems
  • keeping the tunnel and equipment clean
  • inspection and maintenance of lighting, ventilation, and primary and emergency power systems
  • periodic inspections of visibility, temperature, wind speed and concentration of carbon monoxide (CO)
